Best Kaiserschmarrn at the Sillianer Hut

Kaiserschmarrn auf der Sillian Hütte

I’ve already told you how much I love Kaiserschmarrn and even shared my favourite Kaiserschmarrn recipe with you. But what tastes almost better than homemade Kaiserschmarrn is the Kaiserschmarrn you can enjoy at a mountain hut after you’ve exhausted yourself.

I had such a Kaiserschmarrn moment last weekend when I was on my mountain bike on the Stoneman Trail and stopped at the Sillianer Hut.

The location of the Sillianer Hut

The Sillianer Hut is located at an altitude of 2447m, in the municipal area of Sillian, directly on the Austrian-Italian border. As the westernmost refuge of the Carnic Main Ridge, the Sillianer Hut is the starting and end point of the Carnic High Trail 403 (Peace Trail – Via della Pace), a base on the 360 Degree East Tyrol Trail as well as the Stoneman Trail.

In addition to its function as a base hut for the Austrian Southern Alps long-distance hiking trail No. 03 (Sillian – Karawankenweg – Radkersburg), the European long-distance hiking trail No. 10 and the European long-distance hiking trail Via Alpina, the Sillianer Hut is also simply a great excursion destination for everyone.

In the immediate vicinity of the refuge, well-marked trails lead to the Heimkehrerkreuz 2273m, Helmgipfel 2433m, Hornischeck 2551m, Hollbrucker Eck 2573m, the Hochgränten war cemetery and many other destinations.

The history of the Sillianer Hut

After the sale of the “old” Sillianer Hut (today Volkzeiner Hut) in the municipality of Außervillgraten and the purchase of the Viktor-Hinterbergerhütte in the municipality of Sillian, it was decided to demolish the old desolate hut and build a “new” Sillianer Hut.

In 1983, the construction of today’s Sillianer Hut began on a magnificent site at the beginning or end of the Carnic ridge, with a view of the Pustertal valley and a fantastic 360-degree view of the Sesto Dolomites, the Ötztal, Stubai and Zillertal Alps, the Villgrater mountains, the Venediger and Glockner regions and the Lienz Dolomites. After a construction period of three years, the hut was opened and inaugurated in 1986.

But hiking and cycling became more and more popular and the number of visitors and their demands increased steadily. Therefore, in summer 2019, a comprehensive extension and reconstruction was started.

I can only recommend a visit to the Sillianer Hut. Either for an overnight stay or simply for a delicious Kaiserschmarrn – or another tasty regional speciality.

Many greetings, Yours
